by Rahul on August 27, 2010

Updates

Google has rolled out some stunning upgrades for its Google Docs, the undoubtedly superb platform for working online with documents. And, not coincidentally for sure, they come in the same week as Microsoft launched its Office 2010 for the public. Gogoel is now giving users more options for sharing documents: private; anyone with a link; or public on the web. The best part is that public documents will get indexed and even appear in search results.

Microsoft may be heavy competitor with its Office 2010 coming out with advanced features; but Google is gradually showing what innovation can do to an app that has been running parallely with Office for quite sometime now. Google Docs has been my favorite for a long time now, and it continues to impress me.

Facebook responds to open letter from advocacy groups
by Rahul on August 24, 2010

Updates

Even after modifying its privacy controls, Facebook seems to still have a lot of work to do. A number of major advocacy groups, including the ACLU, EFF, and CDT, sent Facebook an open letter detailing some of the outstanding issues with Facebook privacy. The letter acknowledged Facebook’s recent steps to more efficient privacy controls but also said that there are still some flaws.
image

They also pointed out that the ‘Like’ button that Facebook had can be used to track user’s browsing activities. But this feature being so widely popular, Facebook needs to find a cooler privacy feature that would enable people to like articles without disclosing their identity, or in cases, maybe having an option to hide or show their identity.

Just 10 days after taking up his new job, Sudarshan jumped to death from his office building. While no suicide note was found, police suspect a failed relationship could be the reason for the suicide.

Around 4.30 in the evening, Sudarshan was spotted by his friends on the 11th floor corridor of the office building. Apparently, he looked disturbed and hassled. A couple of minutes later, Sudarshan jumped off the building.

He was found lying dead in a pool of blood. Sudarshan was rushed to the nearest hospital, but was declared dead on arrival by doctors.

Since the Android first hit the market in 2008, many features had been added. But with time, Google has decided not only user’s demands in the next release, but also provide more facilities that would no doubt make it stand a lot apart from the others.

Yahoo! taking a dive into social networking

Updates

Yahoo had been having this social feature for quite sometime now, where the user would have to share his status updates. Then it would be visible to his friends if he had a mutual both way following and friend approval. But now with the concepts of Facebook and Twitter gaining steady grounds, Yahoo is determined not to fall behind in the race.

The new features that Yahoo boasts of lets users share their updates irrespective of a both way follow, a feature pretty similar to that of Twitter. Yahoo users would now be able to see each others updates much more easily than before with the new features that doesn’t require a both way follow or friend approval. It will be interesting to see how Yahoo regains its market share in the social networking segment where it hadn’t had a great time amidst the big players.

IE6 usage at 4.7%, IE8 up at 30%, browsers lookout!
by Rahul on August 10, 2010

Updates

The IE6 had been a worry for many web developers till now, but in the last one year, its usage has dropped by around 7%. So its really a cause of cheering amongst them, not to forget Microsoft too. IE8 usage has been pretty decently rising, with 30% of the market share being held by it in the US.

True that despite other browsers like Chrome and Mozilla being much faster and efficient, IE’s success continues to be impressive. I personally use Mozilla and Chrome, but checking out IE 8 felt that it’s pretty much more decent than any of the previous versions of IE.

Steve Jobs: People voting against Adobe Flash by buying an iPad every 3 seconds
by Rahul on August 6, 2010

Updates

It had been a craze for quite a long time, and still so a lot now. But Adobe Flash seems to be on the verge of decline of its usage and popularity with people giving thumbs up to the iPad, which doesn’t support Flash. Steve Jobs expressed his view on this subject.

With the iPad selling like anything right now, it seems quite justified to say that Flash is nearing its end. Adobe needs to take out a newer cat out of its bag to counter the decline in Flash compatibility, to counter the iPad atleast?

Twitter’s spam accounts, which nearly everyone who knows Twitter knows about, are gradually turning more threatening. With URL shorteners compressing links more and more, the possibility of users clicking on a harmful link is all the more.

Also, many of the links they keep on sharing consists of sites loaded with heavy malicious JavaScript, which often transfers heavy payloads to it’s users. So Twitter, as defined by it’s own class, surely needs to find a way to beat the spammers
