Users now realizing Facebook’s latest changes show they are wary of their competitor Google Plus
by Rahul on August 30, 2011

Updates

Facebook has recently made some pretty decent tweaks into their existing interface. All of them aims at the popular features which had been giving an edge to their closest rival Google Plus. These changes come at a time when people are in two-minds which platform to use. Facebook is trying it’s level best to provide it’s users with best in-class experience.

Some of the most noticeable changes are the privacy controls for each status update (a 99% copy of Google Plus), privacy settings for each of the account information that an user can have in his or her profile (100% inspired by Google Plus) and a nice tweak to the apparently horrible theater mode photo viewer. In the photo viewer, the previous and next arrow have been aesthetically placed with the ‘Like’ and ‘Comment’ buttons finding a place a notch inside the photo thus saving some vital space below the pic.

It is obvious that Facebook users will be finding the changes very helpful and might just keep them a few days more from shifting to Google Plus. It will be a treat to watch what happens. Do you use Facebook or Google Plus more often? Are you planning to move to the other soon?

How is Cognizant racing to the top?
by Rahul on August 29, 2011

Updates

The growth of Cognizant have been absolutely fabulous over the past few years. Being coined as the fastest growing IT company for some years now, it has lived up to it’s reputation and have managed to acquire an envious position of late. Now it is the only company which can remove Infosys from it’s number 2 position and take a pride place just after the number 1 TCS.

There has been quite a few factors recently, the demand for outsourcing going through some hiccups, the visa issues, but all this doesn’t seems to have taken a hit at Cognizant. Is it their perfect working model. Is it their profitability policy? In uncertain times such as today, to post regularly incremental figures and literally racing to the top is not just a one-off phenomenon.

Larger peers around the organization in the ranking list might just take a closer look and make an analysis on this. It is always good to see someone making a good run successfully amidst the volatile environment when nothing seems to be certain around us. Do you have any idea how Cognizant has been managing to achieve this feat? Feel free to comment below.

How is South Point going to change with the CBSE board being introduced

Updates

South Point will finally be allowing it’s students to opt for the CBSE board. The previous West Bengal board will also continue to be present along side. Needles to say, this top prestigious institution is headed towards a major infrastructural revamp following this change. The administration must be accomplishing awareness and training drives to prepare the existing faculties for the challenge. New faculties might also be included in the new system.

But like all new beginnings, there are risks, speculations and expectations associated with this move. The guardians of the students have already been doing the analysis with data and information from various as to what are the pros and cons of the system if their ward is to pursue under either of the boards, what might the future implications be like. There are several factors that come into play when one starts to think of this scenario.

Change of syllabus and pattern

The students who have so far been studying under the West Bengal board will suddenly be facing a new environment, where questions get objective instead of subjective, where clear concepts to solve unknown mathematics problems become more critical than solving some generalized huge problems, where techniques of studying will have to change from referring to limited number of books to a ocean of books. Choosing the right books will become crucial as CBSE being an all-India board will have a decent high number of options when it comes to books to choose from for every subject. It might not be that serious a issue because with the quality of faculty and guidance South Point possess, but the students will also have to be proactive to accustom themselves to this pattern.

Varying pressure and study load

The pressure of study will be one of the biggest change that students will experience. Minds will feel more free and less burdened. Rather than memorizing answers to questions 3-4 pages long, points and specific details will come to the forefront with higher priority. Needless to say, solving the question papers is going to form the integral part of the study plan of the students. I am not going into the study plan details now. But this less burden on the mind should not be interpreted at any cost that you can manage by studying less. On the contrary, you should be following a more strategic and systematic study plan. Smart-working students come off with far better performance than their hard-working counterparts with the same amount of effort.

All India Entrance Examinations Exposure

Most of the all India entrance examinations have their syllabus nearly same as the CBSE/ICSE syllabus unlike the West Bengal board which synchronizes only with the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination. So if you are opting for the CBSE board, you might just have the edge over your West Bengal board counterparts when it comes to the All India exams which opens you up to an array of institutes to pursue your higher studies across India. But it’s a win-win situation. Look at it this way, you have an edge on the All India exams which have much higher competition as it is on an all India basis, but your counterparts from West Bengal board have an edge on the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination which has much lesser competition compared to AIEEE and other national entrance exams. So this becomes a deciding factor.

What can you do

Have you already decided which board to opt for? Share your reasons by commenting below and help your friends. If you are a Pointer, click here and please share this post on your wall and with your friends. Are you still undecided? Just go through the comments below or ask a question here.

Update (10 hours later)

As far as I know, number of students selected for science will be 350 as it happens every year. But if the number of students opting for CBSE crosses 200, separate sections might be started, thereby taking the total count to 550.

Google Plus will be a Facebook and Orkut killer

Updates

People have never really sticked to one particular social networking site for a long time. Since Orkut started out way back in the 2000s, people flocked into it and it became a madness. There was nothing that could be compared to Orkut’s mad addiction to anything in the contemporary internet or physical world. Students and adults, geeks and normal people, everyone went on to live into it. It became a world of it’s own.

Along came Facebook. It had been there for quite sometime. But Indians took time to get to into it’s craze as they had already been into Orkut and Orkut too had been complacent and happy that people are using it. Slowly but steadily the new features of Facebook lured people away from Orkut. Many people who did not want to leave Orkut had to leave because many of their friends are no longer using it.

Along came Twitter, the birth of micro-blogging. Then as evolution being the trend, micro-blogging and sharing updates with superb privacy controls and some extravagant features lead to the birth of Google Plus. It will definitely be a extraordinary platform for quite some decades to come for sure.

‘Only’ Bengal hit out of the park, Paschimbanga for a new name!?
by Rahul on August 20, 2011

Updates

All the frenzy regarding the flashy only Bengal campaign was hit by massive surprise as the name got changed to a very Bengali version of West Bengal, Paschimbanga Like many other Bengalis and citizens of the state, I am very unhappy with this change. Not only will this be poor substitute for the name ‘Bengal’, but it will also be difficult to pronounce for Indian non-Bengalis, leave alone foreigners. Also the purpose of it moving up the list in the names of states will get little boost by this.

Infosys criteria for placement for 2012 batch

Updates

Offcampus Tips, News, Downloads Here
The season for campussing and placement for 2012 batch graduates has started to come in the air. It is still quite sometime, but not too early to start preparing. So for many aspirants across the country, it is an anxious wait until they bag their dream job. The current recruitment system for Infosys has quite a few number of rules that are followed besides the traditional technical and HR interview. To start with some study materials, click here.

The eligibility criteria, like most other companies, starts with a cut-off of a 60% on aggregate throughout. That means 60% in class 10 examination, 60% in class 12 examination, and 60% in your graduation degree (in some universities you need to score 6.75 out of 10 to remark it as 60%). Then there are the occasional puzzles and aptitude tests to practice which the best book to buy would definitely be this one. Then there are the puzzle books by Shakuntala Devi. The first part and second part are pretty decent enough for such recruitment drives.

Some of the subjects that needs to be taken care of before you want to appear for the interview process are as follows (important relevant books to study and links have been provided):
1. Database Management: Book by Korth
2. Java Programming: Book by Schildt
3. Networking: Book by Forouzan
4. C Programming: Book by Kanetkar
5. Oracle SQL: Book by Bayross

But there had been a lot of discussions going on in various social networking sites regarding some of the processes undertaken. I would like to highlight some of these here. All the information has been found publicly in the web across more than one site. These in no way are intended to malign the image of anyone, but might just be some personal grievances or situations faced by certain individuals. But nevertheless, they form the part of the recruitment process. Here they go.

Another recession: Should you worry?
by Rahul on August 14, 2011

Updates

People have been saying all across that in the outsourcing world, when US sneezes, India catches a fever. It is surprising to see that in spite of partial dependency on the US companies, the markets in India are still so sceptical about the impact of the debt crisis in US now. Rest assured, it’s going to strike against a stiff barrier before entering India. Despite so many outsourcing firms blooming large and sprouting out due to the global needs, it is not only US that the world depends on.

True that some effect of the turmoil would be felt in every part of the world because after so much globalization a part of every economy at present in the world depends on one or the other economy of a different country partially. So it is not surprising that a mild upheaval in one economy is going to cast a similar positive or negative affect in the economies in other parts of the world. It is high time that we tend to minimize our dependency on the US as we are ourselves moving towards a self-sustaining economy. True that outsourcing will continue to function the way it is now, but that should not be such a body whose heart lies in the US. Major organizations have already realized this back in 2008 and henceforth moved across to Europe and South America and lot of other countries where they previously did not exist.

Should the working professionals worry?

If you are working in a outsourcing company where your client is based in US or UK, there might be a cause of worry if your organization is small. If it’s a middle level organization you are working for, you can relax a bit. And if your organization is amongst the top in the country or world, you can have a beer. But, having said all this, it would be unfair not to say that your package would remain unaffected. Because organizations have their profitability in their mind. So hikes and perks might dry down.

Should the 2011 batch worry?

In case your college is not amongst the top few colleges or a decent graded college in your state, there are few things ought to look at:
   1. Try to figure out the position of your institution from some reliable ranking lists available in the internet. If your’s is among the top few in the state, be it private or government, you can consider it a green signal from this front.
Weightage: Medium
   2. Take a close look at the recent quarterly performance of the organization you have been waiting to join. If the organization posted an outstanding performance last quarter, then you can have a sight of relief.
Weightage: High
   3. Notice the impact of the current market crisis. If the present crisis continues to prevail for sometime more, and it spreads slowly across nations, then the situation can get a bit uncertain. But it is fine if the economies strengthens after sometime.
Weightage: Very High

Should the 2012 batch worry?

There is no need to press the panic button right now. But there is a need to press the ‘Wake Up’ button though. You will need to brush up your past semester skills. You will need to stay more alert than before when you are taking any career decisions and at the same time keeping a close watch on the market. In case, you are not comfortable in understanding the market, keep in touch here.

‘Onsite’ and the ghost in the IT industry
by Rahul on August 12, 2011

Updates

The term ‘onsite’ is a favorite in the IT industry. Everyone wants to go onsite. Such is the madness, people start dreaming of onsite even before entering the company. It has cast a mysterious spell on the IT sector. It was not meant to be this way in the beginning. But it has happened starting from way back in 2007.

For beginners, here is what the scenario is like. The client is generally from outside India. They have outsourced their work to an IT company in India. It is allotted to a particular istockphoto_3826600-airplane-above-the-clouds branch of the company in a particular city. But this distance factor often comes in the way of smooth communication between the client and the Indian company. For reason, someone from India is sent to reside at the client’s location until the job is done. The salary at the client’s location is normally 3-5 times of what you would be getting at ‘offshore’ (term used to denote the location where the work is outsourced to). It depends a lot on what your job role is, where you are going, and most importantly, what your designation is. The factor that decides who will go and what effect it has on others is the most interesting part to be discussed now.

Normally, it happens such that there is an experienced professional at offshore, or a pretty capable team at offshore. The other person with generally more than 2 years of experience ist2_9438408-close-up-of-a-young-woman-looking-excited-against-white-backgroundleaves for onsite. He might be having a relevant skill set required to the job done, or might have handled such projects very well in the past, or belongs to an elite team in the organization which handles such onsite positions, or have been waiting for onsite for quite some time. This is what happens in most cases.

The excitement, hype and happiness that comes with the first onsite travel is pretty obvious. It’s as if you have found the real meaning of your existence at last. You have found the real meaning of your getting a job at last. I don’t believe in it. But people seem to give the priority to money and wealth even above their own happiness. It is good no doubt, but not worth so much celebrations. Anyways, it apparently came down as a God’s blessing on him and he leaves happily for his new task feeling lucky and blessed. People at offshore feel confident with him at onsite and are sure about getting the job done.

The scenario gets a bit cloudy when people at offshore do not feel confident enough about the efficiency about the person who just left for onsite.istockphoto_14455683-eye It might as well happen that the person truly lacks the credibility to go for onsite. Well, then, there must be something which led him there, right?

The first and foremost things that comes to mind are contacts with higher management. Such contacts can prove very much useful and more so if you know actually how to make contacts. Secondly, in many companies, there is an elite section of reserved associates for such special roles. Once you enter them, it’s always a cakewalk to get such opportunities.

Not that he will be unable to deliver, but that will be far below expectations. But that won’t be noticed by anyone as the offshore team delivers slightly more than expectations and that compensates more than enough for the total effort by offshore and onsite. But the discontent and grudge that is created amongst the offshore team members is something vital and it affects the team a lot. People will constantly curse and hope he is being thrown out. Well, that seldom happens truly, as you might be guessing by now.

A different aspect that needs to be reflected upon is what happens to many people when they do not get to visit onsite.istockphoto_736395-stress It doesn’t happen generally, but there are cases where people simply lose their mind when it comes down to not getting an onsite opportunity. They would get angry easily. They would blame their onsite counterparts (even if the guy or gal at onsite is capable and deserved the opportunity) for every possible opportunity. Frankly speaking, this person have sacrificed his inner peace for the sake of not getting an onsite opportunity. Not to mention, the team spirit (if it exists at all in such a scenario) suffers. The situation turns worse if this person has been sent back from onsite for some issues and then someone else has been sent in his place.

Well, we all got to learn from such situations we continue to face in our lives or hear from others. Had any such experience? Feel free to share below.

IT and ITIS: Head-on Comparison
by Rahul on August 7, 2011

Updates

IT and ITIS. The twins of the outsourcing world. One refers to Information Technology, the other IT Infrastructure Services. Most of us often get confused as to which is exactly what, which will propel our career to the highway of success faster. Coming to the basic facts, both have their very core base as information technology. That means the underlying technologies and skill-sets that are required for the functioning of both the systems are the very same. The only thing that will vary is the job role and the activities related to the particular role. The organization TCS has recently stepped into this ITIS territory and so TCS ITIS is a clear top notch player in this field now.

Basic Difference

The core difference stems from the fact that ITIS is a service type job role, the other is a not so well-defined job role, i.e. IT will include virtually from anything starting from development to testing and might even have some of the related tasks in ITIS. Tasks in ITIS form a sub-set in IT in a way. Let’s say people who are in support activities at present in the IT field, you can well compare them to their corresponding counterpart in the ITIS field who are providing a similar application support. So it cannot be said that those who work in IT are straightaway in a better position.

The Technical Catch

The catch lies in the fact that even though they originate from the same base, their basic functionality largely differs. An ITIS profile in most of the cases will be service oriented. There will be systems that needs maintenance and support and hence superior quality ITIS teams will need to provide quality service to the vendor. Occasionally there might be full scale developments in case the vendor requests for something new. But in IT, it’s all too generic. It cannot be said that the works will be more on development, or more on testing or maintenance. It can be anything and everything depending upon the requirements of the client. Some people say that it varies a lot based on the particular city, but that seldom is the case. So as you can see, ITIS apparently though might seem to be a smaller subset of service work of IT, is not the actual case. It’s in fact a modified version of the maintenance and service tasks of the IT with it’s own blend and flavor. It is not non-technical support activities of IT in a new form at all.

Beginning Your Career In ITIS

Like any new field, ITIS also had it’s own set of uncertainties among the minds of the people who got selected for it. There have had been no precedence which they could gather from their seniors who have worked in this field. But it was a position you could not refuse since it came from the biggest organizations in the world with some of the finest packages.

But I do not see any cause for concern as this field will offer you immense opportunities to learn starting from Java to Cloud Computing. It will never disappoint one with the urge to learn and grow. You can start right now with some books and be assured that your study will not go in vain. You can always come back to core IT companies after spending some time in your ITIS role. So put that smile back on your face.

The Final Verdict

ITIS is a new venture in the world of outsourcing by new companies. It is destined to grow beyond it’s visible opportunities. There will be growing demand for skilled technical people in this sector. It will be always different from core IT in the ways that I have mentioned above, but it will never be far from it. Do you have any opinion or doubt that you want to ask? Feel free to comment below.

Achieving and performing without working in the IT sector: Tribute to the ‘a class apart’
by Rahul on August 5, 2011

Updates

There are no end to deadlines in the IT sector. If you are working on a development project, you have deliverables and codes to complete within the timeline. If you are working on a support project, you have to provide support as and when it is required to meet the demand of the hour. It is always a race with time. You always feel you do not have enough of it to complete all your tasks. Same is with your supervisors as well, in fact it is so for most people in the IT industry except few lucky ones who only need to spend the stipulated 9 hours daily and leave without any pressure of deadlines.

But there is an elite group of people who are a class apart and who can achieve he impossible, defying the law of conservation of energy. They get to accomplish tasks that require lots of effort by not giving any effort, well, almost.

istockphoto_362114-hatching-the-idea For them, work is just a wastage of effort and time. As some of them claim, they love to be ‘around’ work, not ‘doing’ the work.

Let’s get it straight now. They act as the coach of the team even though they are the captain of the team! He wants his team members to do the job for him as he lazes around. Occasionally, and let me put that very rarely, he acts to provides moral support to his team members! Not that he is bad at that though. If required he can pour his heart out at help his team members out of the trickiest most troublesome situation, that’s his best side. He might spend hours until he achieves what he wants to do, be it in his own work, or helping out his own team members or members of a different team. But, as you already might have guessed, that happens very rarely. It will be a very big day and almost everyone (yes, everyone including PLs and GLs!) is going to raise their eyebrows seeing him work, or being sincere (seemingly trying to be).

It seems a pretty useless and unwanted person he is in the team. Isn’t it? Apparently, he is. But that’s not the whole story. In fact, it’s only a part.istockphoto_14428635-heroic-man-in-city There’s a lot more to him than meets the eye. He can read you inside out when you are talking with him. His brain collects signals of your likes, dislikes, hobbies, your close ones, their food preferences, holiday preferences, your shopping habits and what not. The cumulative data is used to process out some vital information that is required to make the best impression on you. Something that will make him appear to you so close that you can share anything with him (don’t take in the wrong sense!).

This is a gift. Really lucky are those who possess such innate quality of impressing people. It can range from your immediate boss, your group leader, your onsite client whom you met at a party. It helps to have this great impression which gives you an edge over the others even when you underperform (well, that doesn’t mean you deliberately underperform and roam around). It makes you appear really an efficient resource. It helps you bag a greater points in the eyes of your boss, hence a nice perk. It favors you on having onsite opportunities.

Well, it does pay off you see! But there are a number of cases when such larger than life images backfires. You can well imagine any scenario when an apparent Jason Bourne, is send on a mission when actually, he is, Adam Sandler!

Did you have any such experience or know someone with such gifted qualities? Feel free to comment and share below.

Infosys to hire an amazing 25,000 in Hyderabad, the race for SEZ begins
by Rahul on August 2, 2011

Updates

The competition is back. After TCS’s stellar performance, Infosys now has announced a new branch in Hyderabad and is going to hire a staggering 25,000 candidates for their new centre in two phases. Phase 1 will comprise of 14,000 recruitments and phase 2 which will include the remaining 11,000 positions.

Infosys has also announced that the revenue for their exports from the Hyderabad center will be close to the 1 billion dollar mark. Now it gets pretty close to competitions with most of the big IT players including Microsoft located there. Now if we take a closer look at the location where this SEZ is located, it appears just beside the Warangal highway. I doubt if people would be able to safely travel from residential areas to this place. Highways such as these are genrally prone to high speed traffic and might surely be a bit of concern for the safety of the people. Not to mention the issues of safety when associates will have to travel home alone.
